Most box braid installs need 6 to 10 packs of braiding hair. Smaller braids, longer lengths, and thicker natural hair push you toward the higher end.
As a general guide:
- Jumbo, shoulder length: 4 to 5 packs.
- Large, mid-back: 5 to 6 packs.
- Medium, mid-back: 6 to 8 packs.
- Small, waist: 8 to 10 packs.
- Micro, waist or longer: 10 to 12 packs.
These numbers assume standard 24-inch pre-stretched synthetic hair (Xpression, Outre X-Pression, RastAfri, etc.). Boho or curly add-in styles need an extra 1 to 2 packs of curly hair on top of the base.
**Tips before you shop**
- Always buy **one extra pack** beyond what your braider quotes — it''s far easier to return an unopened pack than to scramble mid-install.
- Match the brand and color across all packs (dye lots vary).
- Pre-stretched hair saves your braider 30 to 60 minutes of prep.
- For knotless, ask your braider what brand they prefer — feed-in technique relies on the hair''s flexibility.
