Dilute sulfate-free shampoo in a squeeze bottle, apply only to the scalp, rinse in the direction of the braids with cool water, and dry under low heat until fully dry to prevent frizz.
Frizz-free braid washing is mostly about **technique and water direction**.
**The 7-step braid wash**
1. **Detangle the ends gently** with your fingers if needed.
2. **Mix your shampoo:** 1 part sulfate-free shampoo + 3 parts water in an applicator bottle. Add a few drops of tea tree oil for itch.
3. **Section the braids** into 4 to 6 loose ponytails so the scalp is accessible.
4. **Apply to the scalp only.** Massage with the pads of your fingers, never your nails. Don''t scrub the lengths — that''s where frizz starts.
5. **Rinse with cool, low-pressure water** flowing in the direction the braids hang. Against the grain is what fuzzes them.
6. **Apply a lightweight, water-based leave-in** down the braids and seal with a few drops of jojoba or grapeseed oil.
7. **Dry properly.** Air dry to 80% (no sleeping on wet hair), then 20 to 30 minutes under a hooded dryer on the lowest heat. A microfiber turban beats a regular towel.
**Frequency**
- Active scalps or workouts: every 5 to 7 days.
- Average: every 10 to 14 days.
- Never skip past 3 weeks.
**Avoid**
- Hot water (loosens braids).
- Conditioner along the lengths (causes slippage and frizz).
- Cotton towels (snag the braids).
- Sleeping on damp braids (mildew, smell, frizz).
